Sebastopol, CA--At the 2004 O'Reilly Open Source Convention held in Portland, Oregon, the Python community paid tribute to one of its own by bestowing the Frank Willison Award for Contributions to the Python Community on Cameron Laird, vice president of Phaseit.
Noted Guido van Rossum, author of the Python language and one of the Award's judges, "In honor of Frank, I believe we converged on Cameron primarily for his writing contributions: python-url, many helpful posts over the years to comp.lang.python, and his Regular Expressions column in Unix Review."
"Contributions can encompass so much more than code," added Tim O'Reilly. "A successful software community requires time, dedication, communication, and education as well as elegant code. With the Frank Willison Award, we hoped to acknowledge all of those things."
The Frank Willison Award is an award dedicated to the memory of Frank Willison, O'Reilly's former editor-in-chief, whose own contributions to the Python community will be deeply missed. Python is the popular and powerful open source object-oriented programming language used for both standalone programs and scripting applications.
