Sebastopol, CA--O'Reilly Media, Inc. has acquired the "Release 1.0" newsletter from CNET Networks. O'Reilly will continue to publish the quarterly newsletter, with the first issue slated for January 2007. O'Reilly, which gave the phenomenon of Web 2.0 its name, will change the newsletter's name to "Release 2.0."
Under the stewardship of editor Esther Dyson, "Release 1.0" has delivered prescient and authoritative insight about the business and social impact of information technology to entrepreneurs, investors, and analysts since 1983.
"O'Reilly's mission is to change the world by spreading the knowledge of innovators, and 'Release 1.0' is a wonderful vehicle for us to bring the early-stage intelligence we glean to technology decision-makers. We're expanding our offerings for entrepreneurs and enterprise technologists, and the newsletter is an important addition to our conferences, training and consulting, and publishing," said Tim O'Reilly, Founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media. "I've long felt that Esther and I are fellow travelers. We share a deep passion for technology's promise, a critical eye for what's real and what's hype, and a determination to inspire the marketplace to embrace technology that matters. I'm honored that she's passing the torch to us, and am committed to carrying on the legacy she's created."
"I can't imagine any team better suited to turning 'Release 1.0' into 'Release 2.0' and continuing its honorable tradition of insight and inspiration," said Esther Dyson. "I look forward to reading and heeding 'Release 2.0' as I spend more time playing in the marketplace rather than watching it."
Editor of the new "Release 2.0" is Jimmy Guterman, a veteran technology editor and author who most recently was Editor in Chief and Publisher of Forrester Magazine. Tim O'Reilly and the O'Reilly Radar team--including Rael Dornfest, Dale Dougherty, Brady Forrest, Roger Magoulis, Allison Randel, and Nathan Torkington--will be regular contributors. Price for an annual subscription remains $285. For information and subscription inquiries, contact release2@oreilly.com.
