Sebastopol, CA, August 5, 2007 -- The inaugural Ubuntu Live, held July 22-24 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon brought together over 750 developers, IT managers, exhibitors, and hackers. Ubuntu, a complete Linux operating system, has been taking the open source developing world by storm.
Co-sponsored by Canonical, Ltd. and O'Reilly Media, Inc., this first year gathering was the key forum for developers, experts, established companies, and newcomers alike to exchange thoughts and knowledge about the world of Ubuntu. Keynote presentations included industry leaders such as Mark Shuttleworth, Stephen O'Grady, and Jeff Waugh. In the spirit of community, the keynote presentations included interactive Q&A sessions that allowed conference attendees direct contact with industry experts.
Conference chair, Jane Silber of Canonical, Ltd. had this to say about the event, "The 'vibe' in the technical and business sessions, as well as the exhibition hall, was characteristic of the excitement and momentum which surrounds Ubuntu itself. The conference provided a fruitful and meaningful forum for both technical and business oriented attendees alike."
Co-located with the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, Ubuntu Live encompassed tutorial sessions, keynotes, breakout sessions, and an exhibit hall. Some of the session topics and speakers included:
-"Managing, Maintaining and Securing Ubuntu Machines," Torsten Spindler, Canonical
-"The 3 Laws of IT and How Open-Source Can Benefit," Pauwl Lunow, Qhuba
-"Open Source Project-based Learning," Scott LeDuc, Capital High School
-"Thin Clients, PHAT Results," Jon 'maddog' Hall, Linux International
-"Ubuntu Semplice: An Italian Collaborative Book," Simone Brunozzi
-"Building the Next Generation Web," Craig R. McClanahan, Sun Microsystems, Inc.
-"Opportunities for Open Source Appliances," Chris Dawson, Box Populi
Ubuntu Live is about spreading the knowledge of industry innovators, but it also is about providing a perfect place to make connections. One of the conference goals was to provide attendees an opportunity to network, share ideas, and information. Events at the conference included:
-A wonderful evening of grown-up fun in the form of drinks and play things (think giant Velcro walls and mechanical surfboards) sponsored by Canonical, Inc.
-Birds of a Feather sessions (BOFs) allowed any participant to lead an informal gathering on any Ubuntu-related topic
Sponsors and exhibitors were able to share information and demonstrate products. The exhibit hall at Ubuntu Live including the following sponsors and exhibitors: Canonical, Dell, Intel, NComputing, Openmoko, Savoir-Faire Linux, Sun Microsystems, System 76, Freespire, IEEE, Intel, POSSE, Powell's Technical Books, and ZaReason. Canonical made two announcements from Ubuntu Live, the release of a web-based systems management tool and a beta of Launchpad "Personal Package Archive" Service.
Planning has already begun for next year's Ubuntu Live to be held July 20-22, 2008 in Portland, Oregon. The call for participation will open in January and the preliminary program will be unveiled in April. Meanwhile, you can get the latest news by subscribing to the conference newsletter:
