O’Reilly and Cloudera Shine a Spotlight on the Best Data Science Projects and Companies From This Year’s California Event
Boston, MA—O’Reilly, the premier source for insight-driven learning on technology and business, and Cloudera today announced the winners of the Strata Data Awards, recognizing the most innovative data-driven startups, projects and initiatives from 2019 Strata Data Conference San Francisco sponsors and exhibitors.
There were four innovative companies recognized with Strata Data Awards:
- Civis Analytics was awarded the “Data Impact Award” for working with the City of Houston to build a new model for more accurately calculating storm damage. This award is given to a project or initiative that uses data science and analytics to have a widespread, positive impact on society.
- The “Most Disruptive Startup” award was given to Okera for helping enterprises do more with their data, without compromising on governance, compliance, or security. New, private companies less than 4 years old, with fewer than 100 employees and under $50M in raised capital are eligible for this award.
- The winner of the “Most Innovative Product” award was Sigma Computing, which provides live, interactive access to a company’s cloud data warehouse through a familiar spreadsheet-like interface, turning business experts into data analysts without writing a single line of code. This award is given to a product or service less than 2 years old, launched by a company of any size or age.
- Spark NLP, submitted by John Snow Labs, was the recipient of the “Open Source Award,” being recognized for providing state-of-the-art natural language processing in Python, Java & Scala. An open source project, tool, or contribution that significantly advances the state of data science is recognized with this award.
“As these companies and their award-winning innovations showed us, the future was on display at this year’s Strata Data San Francisco Conference,” said Ben Lorica, chief data scientist at O’Reilly and Strata Data Conference program chair. “Keep an eye on these companies—and all of our finalists—as they represent where the industry and data science are headed.”
Strata sponsors and exhibitors were invited to submit their project in the four categories and a panel of data science experts selected the finalists. Strata attendees voted this week for the company of their choice in each category.
